WRE Carnival

We are so blessed to be able to use White Rock Elementary to worship each week. As a thank you, Uptown would like to man the Hot Dog Station at their Annual PAC Carnival to raise the last of the funds they need for the new playground (that our kids will get to use, it’s being installed this summer!!!)

We need volunteers to:

  1. Go shopping for those massive costco hotdogs and buns, condiments

  2. Lend your portable/luggable BBQ for cooking the hotdogs.

  3. Sign up for a stint as a BBQer, a Wrapper, a Greeter, etc for the evening. Hopefully you’ll be able to serve as a family and then have time to enjoy the event as well!

If you have any questions, please contact info@uptownchurch.ca and we’ll do our best to answer them! Sign up will be started on May 5th for volunteering at the event!

Maundy Thursday Dinner

800800p1573EDNmainMaundy-Thursday.jpg

A re-creation of The Last Supper with a modern vision. We'll be in the Upper Room at Beecher Place (12160 Beecher Street, Crescent Beach).

We will be sharing some of the traditional Passover foods in potluck style as a community who loves Jesus and each other, while partially re-enacting parts of the Last Supper and being moved towards the sombreness of the Mount of Olives/Gethsemane and the arrest of Jesus.

Uptown (with the great help of Lorne Stapleton of Stapleton Sausage) will be providing the meat for the occasion (lamb shanks and sausages) while we encourage each family to bring one of the following dishes: roasted potatoes, hardboiled or stuffed eggs, a salad made with romaine lettuce, a variety of vegetables or vegetable dishes or a sweet treat to share after the service.

Potluck Sign Up

We will begin at 6:30 with our delicious feast and inspired conversation. At 7:30 Roger will give a short devotional that ends in us taking the last cup (communion) around sunset (8:08 pm). At that time we will have a short worship service.

About 9 pm we will start cleaning up, so those of you with small children can leave, and those of you with children who can haul things to cars will be reminded of the Israelites enslaved in Egypt...(j/k)

Space is limited to the first 80 people who have signed up (including children) suggested donation of $5 per person is not required to register.

KITCHEN PARTY!!!

KITCHEN PARTY is a potluck (soup/casseroles/chips & dip/crackers and cheese/meat, sweet things) in the kitchen (and the rest of the house) where everyone stands around and eats and chats and communes with each other! It’s a wonderful time to get to know each other in a more relaxed state, so those of you who want to ask Erin about her album, or Jeremy about his studies, or want to get to try some delicious Filipino dish - come and be with us!

If you didn’t have a chance to sign up on the clipboard, you can sign up here to bring something to share.

This will be the last KP at Jen Stapleton’s house for a few months, but we will continue on the first Sunday of the month either with KP at the McAllister house or with BBQs at the church! Stay tuned!

MOVING DAY

Let’s see how quickly we can move the Art Camp Supplies and Nativity Play bins from the McAllister Garage to the “Basement Church Storage Unit”!

We’d love some strong backs and some nifty organizers in this venture. Lots of hot coffee will be provided (and water, and tea) as well as a hearty Irish Stew for lunch when the shelving units are down in the storage area.

Please let Jen know if you are able to help by emailing her at: info@uptownchurch.ca. We’d hate to run out of stew!

Improving Your Serve

Each year the BCBC and the BGC put together a conference for all of us to learn how to better participate as laity and leaders in our local churches. This year has a local White Rockonian as the keynote speaker, Gretchen Teerling sharing “He Is Able: Engaging Our Generation With The Gospel Of Christ.”

If you purchase your tickets in advance, they are $12, but they are only $20 at the door if you decide to go last minute!

A number of the Uptown leadership will be in attendance and we would like to encourage you to join us!

Volunteer Meet UP

What does this TOUCHING of HEARTS mean when we spend so much of our Sunday morning remembering the details of the Bible story and trying to keep the boys from wrestling and the girls from whispering? Let's have a real discussion over some novice Greek food (3/5ths of my kids are Greek, that must count for something) and some fun interactions. You can ask all of your questions to our experts, Katie and Rachel - and all your techie questions about materials and curriculum - by Jen. We are SO excited to have ALL of you gather together! Please make sure you come for food, fellowship and frolicking!

Christmas Eve in a Barn
Dec

Christmas Eve in a Barn

“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:10-12

Come to the manger, see the Christ Child, God Incarnate and worship! This is an interactive and contemplative worship service, so if you would like to volunteer to read, please do! We will be hearing the story of Jesus’ birth through the retelling of stories, singing of carols and hymns and special music, words and symbolically spreading the light of the world with (electric) candle lighting in the oldest barn in Surrey.

It’s a chilly night and we are outside in an open barn, so wear lots of layers, hats and mittens, and bring a blanket to hunker down with if need be.

Parking is limited, so if you can carpool, please do!

*A more child friendly service will be held earlier in the day, at 3 pm

Christmas Eve in a Barn

Come with your family to our Annual Christmas Eve in a Barn event. This earlier service will be more child-focused and will include a story specifically for your younger children. Please know that it is an open barn, and it’s the middle of winter, and it’s, well, COLD. Please dress warmly and pack a woolen blanket to snuggle in!

This is an amazing opportunity to centre ourselves around the REASON for this special holiday, the birth of the Christ Child. Make time to celebrate Jesus’ Birth in a lowly manger with others and worship the Incarnate God.

*A more contemplative service will be held at 8pm

Students Grades 6–12 will meet every Sunday evening from 6:30-8:30 in the gym.

Expect: FOOD. FUN. MUSIC. FRIENDS. FAITH.

I would love to hear from you and offer myself as support if I can in any way lend a listening ear, prayer and friendship as we all navigate the extreme challenge of parenting, mentoring, or being in the middle of the teenage years. If you ever want to have a coffee and a chat, I would love that.

So excited to see what God is going to do in the lives of our students this year!

Love to you all,

Children & Youth Led Nativity Service

Advent, Week Three

Chara/Joy

Each year our children and youth compile some kind of Nativity Service, whether it’s a full-on musical play, a series of cute preschoolers in costume singing songs or a series of moving renditions of poetry, music and dance, each year gets better and better.

This year look for all of the above as the students and children are currently learning and want to share the Genesis stories and how they foretell the story of The Good News, a light shining in the darkness.

In combination with the “Expressions of Advent” series you will be able to experience beautiful art-filled visions of The Good News Story from ALL participants in our community on December 23rd.
